Workshop 1

Part 1: Know who your target audience are

We’ll get a clear picture of the people you are trying to reach, describing each group – who they are, where they are and what matters to them – so you can picture who you are talking to in order to do it more effectively. There may be multiple groups you need to speak to separately, including the people you want to support, potential volunteers and other organisations.

Part 2: Know who you are

We’ll define your organisation’s values and what makes you unique, so you can make sure you communicate this in every piece of marketing, to help people remember it and connect with what you do.

Part 3: Know how to say it

We’ll show you how to write copy that gets across what you do, how you do it and why, in a way that’s concise and compelling. We’ll create the key messages for each group you want to reach, based on the things that matter most to them and show you how to use design and images that connect with them.

By the end of this session you’ll have what you need to create a marketing plan and marketing pieces that work, in workshop 2.

Workshop 2

Part 4: Making a marketing plan

We’ll cover how to use marketing effectively to not only let more people know about your project, but to help them take those first steps to come through your door, and to keep them coming back. We make a plan of which marketing pieces you need, how, when and where to use them and then look at how to make effective marketing materials that work.

Essential items – leaflets and an online presence

As a minimum, you need an effective leaflet or poster promoting what you do, a way people can contact you and somewhere online where people can find out more – this doesn’t have to be a whole website; a social media page is a good place to start. We’ll put what you’ve done in the first workshop into an effective leaflet that’s eye-catching, readable and makes people take action. We’ll use the same on your online page and make a plan of content to share.

Other marketing – websites, emails, adverts

This session can focus on other marketing tools of your choice. I can show you how to plan and build a website that represents you well, is easy to use and helps more people engage with what you’re doing. I can show you how to set up an email list and newsletter to keep in touch with people and how to use advertising to boost awareness of your project – or anything you specifically need and how to create and manage it.

Course structure

The 2 workshops can be run on consecutive days or in the same week, or one week apart depending on what suits you. You can attend as few or as many marketing cafes as you’d like to after the training for continued support.

Marketing cafes

It’s often when you start putting things into practice that questions crop up so you can come to my free marketing sessions where we can work together, troubleshoot issues, feed back on marketing and share ideas. See dates and locations.

Course materials

The workshops are delivered in person using mostly practical exercises with worksheets and a few additional resources. You will be sent copies of the materials for future use along with any other resources that might be helpful to support your ongoing work.

“Julia has been so helpful and this will make such a difference to us”

The marketing sessions have been extremely helpful to us as a community project and we have learned a lot about how to market the project. Julia helped and guided us through the process of marketing towards the people that use our events, volunteers and donators. It has made us more aware that everything that we put out whether that be online or physically has such an impact on how as a project we are perceived. It helped us pinpoint how to describe our project in a much more defined way. We came out of the sessions with much more of an understanding of our audience, how to market to them and what practical steps we can take to keep our vision central to everything in a positive guided way. We’re so pleased to have had this opportunity as Julia has been so helpful and this will make such a difference to us. – Louise, Forest Exchange
